Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
