A defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats associated with Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about classified matters in any cars.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He explained that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified level in any vehicle, because of the growing risks of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Defence Background
This revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
The broader security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, including transport use to discussions practices.
