The Compassion of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Because my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I should apply for a role with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but immediately informed my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
